PHASE FOUR

Status: Fundraising

Phase Four largely brings us back to the portion of the forest bounded by Laurel Run Road, Greenlee Road, and Bear Gap Road known as Greenlee Mountain. Existing trails in the area include Sand Knob, Owl Gap, and Wildcat Gap, with the two former being lesser-used fall line trails and the latter, a challenging descent that is increasingly becoming unsustainable because of continued erosion.

The planned construction includes building a connection from Greenlee Road, near the entrance to Croyle Trail, over the Greenlee Mountain ridgeline. A long, meandering descent connecting to the nearly complete Phase Two trail that parallels Laurel Run Road will be added. Wildcat Gap Trail will increase in length, gaining a new entrance near the intersection of Gettis Ridge Road and Bear Gap Road, while maintaining its challenging character.

Two additional trail segments have also been included in Phase Four. A key addition will be the reroute of Dylan's Path, providing another way to access the Tussey Mountain Trail while staying on Rothrock Forest. Furthermore, a portion of the Sassafras Trail north of Flat Road is included in the scope of the project.

In total, Phase Four includes 9.7 miles of new or rerouted trails, aiding connectivity of existing trails, roads, and facilities, as well as improved sustainability of the trail network.

Fundraising is currently underway with planned construction in 2027.
