Registration for Girls Rock, a mountain biking program for young girls, is open for the September session. Classes for this session take place on Mondays, September 9th to 23rd.
Now in its fourth year, Girls Rock was created by Happy Valley Women's Cycling (HVWC) to empower girls through cycling. HVWC Vice President Mary Ann Hanlon developed the program after participating in a mountain bike race benefiting Little Bellas. Interested in bringing a similar program to State College, Hanlon contacted Little Bellas to see about getting a chapter in the area. While a Little Bellas chapter ultimately didn't happen, HVWC stepped in and supported Hanlon in creating her own program.
Girls Rock offers two instructional sessions for middle school girls (ages 11 to 13). The sessions include personalized coaching and skill-building games that teach braking, shifting, and bike handling. They take place at different locations in the area, including Circleville Park, Harvest Fields, Suburban Park, and Colyer Lake.
HVWC instructors enjoy introducing girls to the sport and watching them develop their cycling skills. Some past participants of the Girls Rock program have gone on to join the HVWC team as junior riders. More information and registration for the program can be found on HVWC's website or by clicking here.
